**“NNNNN – a first-rate show that’s alternately funny, engrossing, and chilling. Here’s political theatre, ironic and moving, that makes as much of its theatre as of its politics**.” -Jon Kaplan, Now Magazine
”*gripping, funny and terrifically performed*... meticulous and nuanced direction” -Kamal Al Solaylee, The Globe and Mail
“Stellar… Earle is a compelling monologist with excellent comic timing, and his satiric story rings eerily true.” – Alison Broverman, Eye Weekly
*The creators of the award-winning Radio :30 present the return of their acclaimed dark comedy. Democrats Abroad is set in the near future, when a right-wing crackdown in Washington sends thousands of U.S. liberals and war resisters fleeing north across the Canadian border. Part dark comic satire, part political thriller, Democrats Abroad centres on Greg, a cynical Toronto actor who falls in love with Angela, an actress and activist from New York City determined to resist the repression which has forced her from her native land. As tensions between Canada and U.S. lurch towards crisis, Greg becomes involved both personally and politically with Angela… with unforeseen results.
Democrats Abroad was created by Chris Earle and Shari Hollett, the writer/director team behind the Dora and Chalmers Award-winning Radio :30, which garnered rave reviews at last year’s New York Fringe (“performed to unsettling perfection… a powerful tale of betrayal and deceit” – N.Y. Times). Earle and Hollett have collaborated on numerous shows, including their acclaimed twin comedies Expectation and Big Head Goes To Bed and Earle’s play Russell Hill, produced by Tarragon in 2003.*
